Petition against lifting the hunting ban on elephants in Botswana

Petition against lifting the hunting ban on elephants in Botswana

Friends of the elephant have started a petition to protect the elephants in Botswana. The government of Botswana is considering lifting the hunting ban on elephants. With the petition they want to call on the government of Botswana not to lift the ban on hunting elephants and to make an effort to create an international nature reserve.

Former President Ian Khama of Botswana announced the hunting ban in 2014. He saw that the number of elephants fell due to hunting and poaching. The reason that the hunting ban would now be lifted again is because the government makes a lot of money with the permits needed to hunt elephants. Another reason for the cancellation is the lack of living space for the elephants. According to Friends of the Elephant, the creation of a large nature reserve spread over Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe would be a solution.
